We literally walked around all day in downtown Amana and I shopped til I almost dropped. This RV park is about a mile and a half north of Amana and KayCee got to stay home where it was cool. We are literally out in a pretty big grassy field. We do have some "Eye Candy" just across the yard. A brand new Country Coach. It clouded up today and now it's lightly raining. Hope it clears up so I can cook some meat over a charcoal fire and watch some fireworks tomorrow night. We will tour some more tomorrow in the surrounding colonies. I still want to walk through a traditional communal kitchen and the original General Store that was built in the 1800s when these colonies came into being. They literally have everything you need to live here, and with very little contact with the outside world. Lunch today was Sandwiches in a Bakery because there was an hour wait in one of the restaurants we wanted to try. Tonight was the weekly farmers market....mostly just local folks. Watched a farmer milk a goat and bought some fresh lettuce. Must still be feeling guilty about the ice cream and fudge we consumed for a coffee break this afternoon! LOL We stopped for an glass of sun tea and visited with a couple that live in Amana. Four guys were playing Blue Grass Music to shop by! I cashed in my wooden nickel (advertisement for a discount on Brats at the Smokehouse and Meat Shop) Got the Brats, some really good Whole Wheat Bread and an Amana Ham. They had lots of good kitchen gadgets. I love Kitchen Stores! Some of the buildings lots were filled with flowers and shrubbery. Some people would say this is just a big tourist trap, but it all has such strong history and religious background with German heritage thrown in. Many of the shops and most of the Colonies are still owned by the Society and you must conform, belong and Remain Faithful, or you will not be able to live there. Middle Amana is the home of the Amana Factory that makes Appliances and Air Conditioners, now owned by Whirlpool. DH would like to tour there, but I haven't checked to see if they allow that. Tomorrow I'm on a mission to find a Giant Wooden Rocker.....I think in South Amana.......and we'll see what else we can pick up!
